Frozen smoked salmon recalled after positive test for Listeria

Krasnyi Oktyabr Inc. of Brooklyn, NY, is voluntarily recalling STARFISH SEAFOOD PREMIUM COLD SMOKED NORWEGIAN SALMON SLICED because the product has tested positive for Listeria monocytogenes.

The STARFISH SEAFOOD PREMIUM COLD SMOKED NORWEGIAN SALMON SLICED was distributed in New York, Florida, Georgia, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Ohio.

The recalled product is identified as follows:

There is concern that consumers may have the recalled salmon in their freezers because of its long shelf life.

No illnesses have been reported to date in connection with this product.

The potential contamination with Listeria monocytogenes was identified by sampling of the product conducted by the New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets. As a result, Krasnyi Oktyabr Inc. initiated a recall of the affected product. The company is cooperating with the New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets and the FDA regarding the recall.

Krasnyi Oktyabr Inc. is a wholesale distributor and did not manufacture the recalled product. The company has notified its affected customers and requested that they immediately discontinue the sale and distribution of the recalled product, identify any remaining inventory, and notify their customers as appropriate.

Consumers who have purchased the recalled STARFISH SEAFOOD PREMIUM COLD SMOKED NORWEGIAN SALMON SLICED are urged not to consume the product and to return it to the place of purchase for a full refund.

About Listeria infections
Food contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes may not look, smell or taste spoiled but can still cause serious and sometimes life-threatening infections. Anyone who has eaten any of the recalled salmon and developed symptoms of Listeria infection should seek medical treatment and tell their doctors about the possible Listeria exposure.

Also, anyone who has eaten any of the recalled products should monitor themselves for symptoms during the coming weeks because it can take up to 70 days after exposure to Listeria for symptoms of listeriosis to develop.

Symptoms of Listeria infection can include vomiting, nausea, persistent fever, muscle aches, severe headache, and neck stiffness. Specific laboratory tests are required to diagnose Listeria infections, which can mimic other illnesses.

Pregnant women, the elderly, young children, and people such as cancer patients who have weakened immune systems are particularly at risk of serious illnesses, life-threatening infections, other complications and death. Although infected pregnant women may experience only mild, flu-like symptoms, their infections can lead to premature delivery, infection of the newborn, or even stillbirth.
