Independent food safety reporting, built to last.

Food Safety News is the only daily independent, nonpartisan newsroom that reports on outbreaks, recalls, and food policy full time.

Why support us

Food safety reporting is a public good the market keeps underfunding.

Every year, contaminated food sends people to hospitals and pulls products off shelves in every corner of the country. Someone has to watch for those events, report on them clearly and fairly, and answer to no one but the reader.

The market rarely pays for that. As media budgets have been cut over the past 20 years, reporters on food and safety beats were among the first to go. Food Safety News was built to fill that gap, and it still does the job most outlets have given up on.

Independent. Nonpartisan. Focused on one question: what is happening to the food supply, and who needs to know. Founded by food safety attorney Bill Marler to keep the beat alive.

Independent revenue streams

Read this as stability, not survival. Food Safety News is a working operation with four revenue streams already in place. Supporting us at this time is not a lifeline. It is a runway. It shortens the path to a fully self-sustaining newsroom. Your contribution is an investment with an endpoint, not another funding stream that we want to maintain.

Choose your track

Two ways in, depending on what you fund. Pick the one that fits.

Food safety and industry

You already work in a food-related industry. Fund resources that reach the public directly, from consumer education to national opinion research, and earn named recognition in front of an audience that shares your stake in getting safety right.

You fund consumer-facing programs. You get recognition with the people who care most about food safety.

Journalism and press

You back independent reporting. Invest in the stability and independence of a newsroom that is thoughtfully diversifying its revenue. Our business model demonstrates that public-interest journalism on a specific beat is sustainable over the long term.

You fund an independent newsroom. You support a durable model for a beat most media outlets have abandoned.

Back the newsroom

Building for the future

Specific, ready to run, and worth backing. Here is where support goes.

Consumer education

Plain-language and visually appealing guides, alerts, and explainers that turn recalls and outbreak news into something a household can actually act on.

Ongoing · Cost shared on request

National public opinion survey

An annual read on how Americans think about food safety, administered in partnership with a respected public opinion expert, and built to be cited by the press and industry that rely on it.

$20,000 to $30,000

Senior access

Older adults carry the highest stakes from foodborne illness and often the steepest barriers to timely information. This program gets food safety reporting to the readers who need it most, at a cost they can afford.

Funders do not influence coverage

Support keeps the newsroom running. Editorial calls sit with editors, full stop. No funder reviews a story before it runs, and no story is off the table because of who funds the work.

How we recognize partners

Recognition is public and honest, never a purchase of influence. Depending on the level, that can mean a named sponsor block on the site, a mention in the newsletter, or a listing on our funder page.

Trust and transparency
