France reported a record high number of foodborne outbreaks in 2022, according to recently released data.

Notified outbreaks were at their highest since the start of surveillance in 1987 and continued the upward trend observed before the COVID-19 pandemic.

In 2022, 1,924 outbreaks were declared, affecting 16,763 people, of whom 643 went to hospital, and 17 died, said Santé publique France.

For 376 outbreaks, a pathogen could be confirmed in the food or in at least one sick person. A pathogen was suspected without microbiological confirmation for 1,260 outbreaks. For 288 outbreaks, no infectious agent was identified or suspected.

The 11 hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS) cases were reported in late 2023. HUS is a severe complication associated with E. coli infections that causes kidney failure. Santé Publique France has published details on Campylobacter infections in 2022, including 60 outbreaks.

Epidemiological surveillance findings are based on the National Reference Center (CNR) for Campylobacter and Helicobacter and mandatory declaration of outbreaks.

CNR data shows that 9,160 strains were identified as Campylobacter. Campylobacter jejuni was the most frequently identified species at almost 85 percent, followed by Campylobacter coli and Campylobacter fetus. Most strains were isolated from stools, and a few from blood samples.

A seasonal increase in isolations was observed during the summer period with a peak in August. This seasonality was also seen in previous years.

A pilot study in France has pointed to a significant under-reporting of shellfish-related foodborne outbreaks.

The objectives of the research were to quantify and describe the health impact of shellfish-related outbreaks as well as the circumstances of occurrence in Brittany, with the end goal of reducing their frequency.

The number of children who suffered a potentially fatal complication of E. coli infection in France reached a record high in 2022, influenced by the Nestlé pizza outbreak, according to statistics recently released.

Hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS), which can be a complication of E. coli infection, is a type of kidney failure that can result in lifelong, serious health problems and death.

In the outbreak caused by frozen Buitoni Fraîch’Up pizzas, 59 patients had a median age of 6. They fell ill between January and April 2022. Two children died.

The number of people sick in a botulism outbreak due to contaminated sardines has grown to 15.

Patients include Americans, Canadians, and people from England, France, Germany, Greece, Ireland and Spain.

At least ten have been hospitalized, and eight have been admitted to intensive care units. One person has died.

Findings suggest that at least 1.6 to 2.1 million new cases of human brucellosis occur every year. This differs significantly from one of the most cited references, which predicts an incidence of 500,000 new cases yearly.
