Updated May 21: Health officials have updated the case count from 20 cases to more than 60. This article has been updated to reflect the new information. Health officials in Kenosha County, WI, are investigating more than 60 Salmonella illnesses reportedly connected to consumption of meat from the grocery store Supermercado Los Corrales in Kenosha, according to Kenosha News. All of the patients have reported eating meat products from the grocery store and subsequently becoming ill. Health officials say they’re still investigating the source of the outbreak, but the grocery store is their focus at this time. One family reported eating pork carnitas from the store and then being sickened the next day. Within a week, the illness had spread to their children, who were taken to a hospital. Other children have been hospitalized after eating the pork carnitas, as well. County health officials said Tuesday that the meat and food preparation area of the store is temporarily closed while the investigation is ongoing, but the remainder of the establishment is open. Symptoms of Salmonella infection include diarrhea, nausea and abdominal pain typically lasting four to seven days. Kenosha County last saw a Salmonella outbreak in 2010.
