The South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control has confirmed another three E. coli infections connected to an outbreak at a daycare in Greenwood, SC, bringing the total case count to 11. These three newly revealed illnesses occurred in people who have already recovered from their infections but had not been previously associated with the outbreak at Greenwood’s The Learning Vine daycare center. The daycare has closed and will not reopen until all staff and children are tested. Health officials say that the daycare does not pose an ongoing public health risk. The health department is continuing to collect and test samples for laboratory analysis, and officials have not confirmed a source of the E. coli. A 2-year-old boy whose older brother attended the daycare died on May 31 after falling ill with E. coli.
