Up to 10 people have been affected in Australia because of the presence of milk in products that are supposed to be dairy free.
Cocobella has recalled all coconut yogurt products after the undeclared milk allergen was identified in some product lines. The company confirmed coconut yogurt is produced in a facility that also manufactures dairy products.
An initial recall only covered certain batches of 110-gram coconut yogurt pouches. However, further testing of all product lines identified the undeclared allergen in other coconut yogurt batches. The recall now includes all Cocobella Coconut Yoghurt flavors and sizes with use-by dates up to and including Oct. 6, 2025. The company’s coconut water range is not affected.
Root cause under investigation
According to the recall notice, products were sold in Woolworths, Coles and independent retailers including IGA nationally and online.
Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ) said consumers who have a milk allergy or intolerance may have a reaction if the product is consumed.
Cocobella said the majority of product lines tested negative for the allergen. The company is continuing to investigate the root cause of the issue.
“We unreservedly apologize for the health impacts, concern and inconvenience this has caused our customers. Cocobella has strict food safety protocols in place and we recognize the trust our customers place in us for their dietary and health choices,” said the firm in a statement.
“We are determined to understand how this allergen found its way into our products so we can ensure it cannot happen again. Cocobella continues to work closely with Dairy Food Safety Victoria and FSANZ to conduct this recall.”
