Texas Pecan Company Inc. of Dallas, TX, is voluntarily recalling certain packages of macadamia nuts and products containing them because they have the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella. The potential for contamination was noted after routine sampling tests by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) revealed the presence of Salmonella in the Macadamia Nuts received from the company’s supplier in November and December 2014. Production of the product has been suspended while FDA and the supplier continue their investigation into the source of the problem. The recalled packaged Macadamia Nuts and Gift Tins (The Executive, Junior Executive, Sweet-N-Salty and Mini Sweet-N-Salty) were distributed nationwide in the company’s retail stores and through mail orders. The products come in 8-oz. and 16-oz. clear plastic bags and in gift tins identified by the name of The Executive, Junior Executive, Sweet-N-Salty and Mini Sweet-n-Salty. The recalled products were sold in November and December 2014 with a pack date of 14320 through 14365, which is located on the bottom left-hand corner of the label.

Salmonella bacteria can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Healthy persons infected with Salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. In rare circumstances, infection with Salmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses such as arterial infections (e.g., infected aneurysms), endocarditis and arthritis.
