Bay Stores Got Uninspected Meat

Seven retail grocery stores in the San Francisco Bay area took possession of meat and poultry products that were NOT inspected by the federal government, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety & Inspection Service announced Tuesday.

Two Safeway Stores, three Real Foods Stores, a Farmer Joe’s Store, and the Berkeley Bowl were on the receiving end of Tracy, CA-based Vatran’s Fine Foods distribution of 11,500 pounds of meat that FSIS says “were produced without the benefit of federal inspection.”

The uninspected meat is now subject to a recall.  When announced last weekend, FSIS said the uninspected meat was distributed to retail outlets in California’s San Joaquin Valley.  But the list released Tuesday contained only Bay Area outlets, not any from the distant inland valley.

The meat lacking inspection was produced between March and October 2009.  No illnesses have been associated with the recalled meat.

Oakland Safeway Stores at 6310 College Ave. and 2096 Mountain Blvd.; San Francisco Real Foods Stores at 2164 Polk St., 2140 Polk St., and 3060 Filmore St.; Oakland’s Farmers Joe’s Store at 3426 Fruitvale Ave.; and the Berkeley Bowl at 920 Heinz Ave. in Berkeley are the stores that received the uninspected meat.

The following products are subject to recall:

Montibella Sausage Company Brand:

Vatrans’s Brand:

The product list may not be inclusive of all products subject to this recall. There may be additional products in commerce that bear one of the following establishment numbers: “EST. 34334,” “P-34334,” or “EST. 34334-M.”

FSIS routinely conducts recall effectiveness checks to verify recalling firms notify their customers of the recall and that steps are taken to make certain that the product is no longer available to consumers.
