Several European authorities have uncovered a group involved in counterfeiting French wine in Italy.

The investigation was led by the French Gendarmerie (Gendarmerie Nationale). It involved the Italian Carabinieri Corps (NAS Carabinieri) and Swiss Federal Police (Police Federale Swiss) with support from Europol and Eurojust.

More details have emerged about national operations concentrating on sunflower oil and alcohol as part of Operation Opson.

Opson Europe, or Opson XII, was coordinated by Europol between December 2022 and April 2023. The focus was alcoholic beverages, olive oil, and origin claims such as Protected Designation of Origin (PDO)

Another three people have been arrested in the second phase of an investigation into expired food being reintroduced into the supply chain.

Measures were taken against the trio this month. The operation involved Europol, France, Germany, Spain, and the Carabinieri NAS of Turin, and Italian Financial Police (Guardia di Finanza).
