More potato and tortilla chips are being recalled because of seasonings that include potentially tainted powdered milk from Valley Milk Products LLC.
This time Old Dutch Foods Inc. is the one issuing a secondary recall. As several other companies in the past week have done, the St. Paul, MN, company is citing possible Salmonella contamination by powdered milk from Virginia-based Valley Milk Products.
The specific Old Dutch, Roundy’s, Urge and Lund’s & Byerly’s chips included in the recall are listed in the chart at right. They were distributed nationwide.
On Dec. 1 U.S. Marshals seized 4 million pounds of products from Vally Milk’s production plant in Strasburg, VA, at the request of the Food and Drug Administration.
On Dec. 9 Valley Milk Products recalled 3.1 million pounds of powdered milk products produced and sold in the period from Dec. 5, 2015, through July 10, 2016. While the FDA has access to company records showing who bought the recalled powdered milk, and when, it cannot publish those details because of a federal law protecting “confidential corporate information.”
As word of the recall trickles through the supply chain, companies have been posting recalls of products that include the recalled powdered milk as an ingredient. The chips from Old Dutch Foods joined those secondary recalls Thursday.
“Product was distributed nationwide through grocery and other retail stores. The recall includes the seasoned potato chip and tortilla chip products (in the chart) and their respective product code dates, which are most easily identified on the front of the package,” according to the Old Dutch Foods recall notice.
“Although no lab tests have confirmed the presence of Salmonella in these products and no illnesses have been reported, we are voluntarily issuing the immediate recall of these products in conjunction with FDA guidance with an abundance of caution and with adherence to strict quality standards for all Old Dutch Foods products.”
Consumers who have purchased the recalled products should dispose of them immediately and contact Old Dutch Foods Consumer Care toll free at 877-228-2273.
Related recalls
A variety of other companies have already recalled processed foods — including products sold under house brands for Wal-Mart, Publix Super Markets, Aldi and Dollar Tree retailers — because of the powdered milk from Valley Milk Products LLC.
All of the products were made with the implicated powdered milk from the plant in Strasburg, VA.
In a document filed in U.S. District Court for the Western District of Virginia the FDA reported environmental swabs collected at the production facility returned positive results for Salmonella.
Inspectors also found company records showing Valley Milk officials had known the pathogen was in the plant for several years and had also been found in finished products.
