Sunshine Mills Inc. of Red Bay, AL, has recalled three store brands of dog food that contain elevated levels of vitamin D.
The new recalls were announced by the retailers, and affect the following products:
- Abound Chicken and Brown Rice Recipe Dog Food, 4 lb. All lots; UPC 11110-83556
- Abound Chicken and Brown Rice Recipe Dog Food, 14 lb. All lots; UPC 11110-83573
- Abound Chicken and Brown Rice Recipe Dog Food, 24 lb. All lots; UPC 11110-89076
- Nature’s Place Real Country Chicken and Brown Rice Dry Dog Food, 5 lb. All lots; UPC 72543998959
- Nature’s Place Real Country Chicken and Brown Rice Dry Dog Food, 15 lb. All lots; UPC 72543998960
- Nature’s Promise Chicken & Brown Rice Dog Food, 4 lb. Best By Dates of November 1, 2018 – November 8, 2019
- Nature’s Promise Chicken & Brown Rice Dog Food, 14 lb. Best By Dates of November 1, 2018 – November 8, 2019
- Nature’s Promise Chicken & Brown Rice Dog Food, 28 lb. Best By Dates of November 1, 2018 – November 8, 2019
The Abound dog food brand was carried in Harris Teeter, King Soopers and Kroger stores. Nature’s Promise was sold by GIANT Food Stores, MARTIN’s Food Markets, and Stop&Shop.
Nature’s Place was carried by Hannaford and Food Lion stores.
Information about these recalls was released on the various retailers’ web sites and via a press release from GIANT/MARTIN’S.
According to the US Food and Drug Administration, dogs ingesting elevated levels of Vitamin D may exhibit symptoms such as vomiting, loss of appetite, increased thirst, increased urination, excessive drooling, and weight loss. Vitamin D when consumed at very high levels can lead to serious health issues in dogs including renal dysfunction.
Consumers with dogs who have consumed the product listed above and are exhibiting these symptoms, should contact their veterinarian.
