Sliced fresh apples — packaged alone and with other fresh-cut fruits and vegetables — are under recall by the Fresh From Texas company because of possible contamination with Listeria monocytogenes.

The voluntary recall initiated Wednesday is for sliced apples sold by H-E-B grocery stores in Texas, according to a recall notice on the Food and Drug Administration website. “The company has ceased the production and distribution of the product as FDA and the company continue their investigation as to what caused the problem,” the recall notice states. Listeria monocytogenes contamination discovered during internal testing by Fresh From Texas spurred the recall. The pathogen was found in two random samples of the same product. The company contact listed in the recall notice did not respond Wednesday to a request for comment. It is not known if the facility that produced the recalled apple products is continuing to process and distribute other products. Listeria monocytogenes is a microscopic organism that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Healthy individuals may suffer only short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea. Listeria infections can cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women. Photos of all of the recalled products are included with the notice on the FDA website. Customers who purchased the product can return the product to the store for a full refund.
