Toll Rises in Rhode Island Outbreak

Seventy-eight suspected cases of Salmonella infection had been reported as of Friday in the outbreak in Rhode Island linked to a bakery that sold holiday pastries.

DeFusco’s Bakery in Johnston is at the center of the outbreak, which now has 46 lab-confirmed cases of Salmonella infection, the Rhode Island Department of Health reported in its latest update. Twenty-seven people have now been discharged from hospitals and one person remains hospitalized. Two people have died.

The health department’s website includes the sites where the zeppole, traditional Italian pastries associated with St. Joseph’s Day observances, were sold or served, as well as the implicated dates.
