Outbreak Recall Continues To Grow

For the second time, Rhode Island-based Daniele Inc. has added both poundage and products to its ongoing recall of Italian-style sausage products.

According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS), the two additional products added to the recall are:

Those products add 23,754 pounds to a recall that now totals more than 1.3 million pounds.  The original Jan. 23 recall was first updated on Jan. 31 when three products and 17,235 pounds were added.  The additional products included:

The recalled products are associated with a nationwide outbreak of Salmonella Montevideo.   The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta reports 207 people have been infected with the matching strain of Salmonella Montevideo in 42 states and the District of Columbia.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), which is investigating the pepper used to coat the recalled salami/salame, says the meat products being recalled have “an extended shelf life up to one year.”  FDA urged consumers to check the list to make sure they do not have any in their homes.

FDA has been testing both domestic and imported black pepper samples, but so far all have tested negative for Salmonella.  Testing continues.

The Rhode Island Health Department has tested pepper samples at Daniele’s from two different suppliers that have come back positive for Salmonella. Those pepper suppliers are Mincing Oversees Spice and Wholesome Spice.

For those who are checking their pantries, here’s the original recall list:

Each package bears a label with establishment number “EST. 9992” or “EST. 54” inside the USDA mark of inspection.

Wal-Mart, Sam’s Club, and Costco are among the national retailers selling these products.   A complete list posted on FSIS’ Web site at http://www.fsis.usda.gov/FSIS_Recalls/ Open_Federal_Cases/index.asp.
