After its first year of operation, the Rapid Recall Exchange, an online service that aims to speed up notice of recalls and the withdrawal of recalled food and products from store shelves, has signed up 500 members.

The end of September marked the first anniversary for the 24-hour communication network, which connects product suppliers and distributors.  The service was commissioned by the Associate Member Advisory Board of the Food Marketing Institute and developed by GS1 US.

The Kroger Co. announced its endorsement of the Rapid Recall Exchange Tuesday. The program, developed by GS1 US in a collaboration with the Food Marketing Institute and Grocery Manufacturers Association, is an online service that standardizes and accelerates food and product recalls and withdrawals.  

The system uses consistent forms and processes, enabling all retailers enrolled in the program to receive the same complete information regarding a recalled product, including product images and handling instructions.  This facilitates information sharing and streamlines the recall process.

Continue Reading Kroger Endorses Rapid Recall Exchange

Food retailers and wholesalers are being offered web seminars and free subscriptions through the end of 2009 for the Rapid Recall Exchange if they subscribe by the end of October.

The marketing push by the Food Marketing Institute (FMI) and GS1, the nonprofit that put bar codes in grocery stores, for the new Rapid Recall Exchange is gaining traction.

The Grocery Manufacturers Association (GMA), which represents food, beverage, and consumer products companies, and the National Grocers Association (NGA), the trade association representing independent retail and wholesale grocers, have both endorsed the Rapid Recall Exchange.
