FDA outbreak table is showing 17 investigations

The Food and Drug Administration has 17 active outbreak investigations according to its Coordinated Outbreak Response & Evaluation status table as of Sept. 3.

The agency is investigating seven outbreaks from the Cycpospora parasite, with a total of 11,739. That count includes 11,458 patients in an outbreak linked to iceberg lettuce products from the Taylor Farms growing and processing facility in Central Mexico. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the Taylor Farms outbreak has sickened people in 20 states.

The Cyclospora outbreaks on the FDA’s table started from dates ranging from June 3 to Aug. 8. The FDA has begun traceback on all of the outbreaks, but has not reported what foods are being traced, except for the Taylor Farms lettuce. As is its practice, the FDA has not reported where patients live or their ages.

Other outbreak news
The FDA is reporting a new outbreak of Salmonella Newport linked to a not yet identified product. The agency is reporting that 97 people have been sickened in the outbreak. The agency has initiated traceback but is not reporting what food is being traced. The outbreak was first posted on Aug. 26.

For an ongoing outbreak of Salmonella I 4,[5],12:i:-, the patient count has increased from 41 to 43 in the past week. The FDA has initiated traceback, onsite inspections and sample testing, but is not reporting what food is being traced or sampled or what location is being inspected. The outbreak was first posted on Aug. 12.
