The products are packaged in clear or green standup bags with date codes stamped on the bottom of the bags. The recalled pistachio products were purchased by consumers from Dec. 28, 2015, through Jan. 27, according to a statement from company president Michael Braga. The company will not be shipping any orders “until everything is tested and cleared,” he said. “We were notified yesterday by the FDA that a random sample from the organic raw pistachio kernels contained Salmonella,” Braga says in the undated statement on the company’s website. “There have been no illnesses reported. We have been issuing refunds for those products purchased from 12/28/15 to 1/27/on our website, www.buyorganicnuts,com. Please dispose of the remaining product you have.” In a separate news release dated Feb. 1, the company reported the positive Salmonella test result came from a one-pound package of raw pistachios that had been purchased online.

Salmonella can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Healthy persons infected with Salmonella can experience fever, diarrhea that may be bloody, nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. In rare circumstances, infection with Salmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses such as arterial infections, endocarditis and arthritis.
