In April, the Public Health Agency of Canada reported 14 cases of E. coli illness, linked to walnuts imported from the U.S. and distributed by Quebec-based Amira Enterprises, which recalled the nuts. Health officials said 10 people were hospitalized and three people developed hemolytic uremic syndrome, an illness associated with E. coli infections that can result in kidney failure.
