A Washington state cheese maker plagued with Listeria problems, including a link to a case of listeriosis in 2010, has agreed to keep its products off the market until it can clean up its processing facility and prove its cheeses are safe to eat, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration said Monday.


As part of a consent decree, Del Bueno owner Jesus Rodriguez agreed to a permanent injunction entered by the Eastern District Court of Washington on April 3.

For the third time in a year, an Eastern Washington cheese maker is recalling cheese because it may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes.


In a news release posted at about 4 a.m. Saturday, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration said that Del Bueno cheese of Grandview, WA. has recalled 16 oz. packages of Queso  Fresco Casero Fresh Cheese, after routine sampling by the Washington State Department of Agriculture detected Listeria contamination.

Environmental swabs collected last Oct. 19 inside a Grandview, WA cheese processing facility were positive for Listeria monocytogenes, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). So were samples of cheese taken from the company’s retail shelves.

FDA confirmed the Listeria contamination at the Yakima Valley business in an April 1 warning letter to Jesus Rodriguez Banuelos, owner of the Del Bueno cheese-making plant.

The warning letter was made public Tuesday.

Del Bueno of Grandview, Washington has recalled all of its 1- or 3-pound packages of Queso Fresco Fresh Cheese, Queso Panela Fresh Cheese, Requeson Mexican Style Ricotta Cheese and Queso Enchilado Dry Cheese because they have the potential to be contaminated with Listeria. 

The products were distributed in retail markets in Washington and Oregon and to the flea market in Pasco, WA.

Washington State’s Del Bueno recalled packages of all sizes of its Queso Fresco Fresh Cheese late Tuesday.

Del Bueno, based in Grandview, is the third Evergreen State cheese maker to recall product for Listeria contamination since February.

The Washington State Department of Agriculture has linked at least one Listeria illness to the recalled cheese.  Queso Fresco Fresh Cheese was distributed to retail markets in Washington and one market in Hermiston, Oregon.
