Brand Castle LLC of Bedford Heights, OH, is voluntarily recalling its “In the Mix” branded monkey bread mix because it was made with powdered milk that has the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella.
“This product is being recalled because an ingredient supplier — Valley Milk Products LLC — has issued a recall for the buttermilk powder used in this product due to the potential for contamination by Salmonella organisms found in their facility and finished product samples during an FDA investigation,” according to the Saturday recall notice from Brand Castle.
“Although no pathogenic bacteria have been found in the powdered products supplied to our blending facility by the ingredient manufacturer, we have decided out of an abundance of caution to recall product produced with the affected lots of buttermilk powder.”
The recalled monkey bread mix was sold to a single retailer in 39 states. The recall includes 168 cases of product.
“If consumers have any of the below listed product, they must discontinue use and discard product immediately,” according to the recall notice.
The product being recalled is In the Mix brand monkey bread mix in 16-ounce boxes:
- Lot number 29JUN18BC6202 on a sticker on the back of the package;
- UPC number 8-44527-03278-2; and
- A best-by date of June 29, 2018.
“Consumers who have purchased this product may return it to the retailer for a full refund, discard the product, or reach out to Brand Castle LLC with proof of purchase for a full refund,” according to the recall notice. “Consumers who have questions should contact Brand Castle LLC at 216-292-7700, Ext. 211, or email at marla.fleischer@brandcastle.com.”
The Saturday recall by Brand Castle is one of at lease five secondary recalls of products made with the potentially tainted powdered milk from Valley Milk, ranging from Publix brand pancake mix to Great Value macaroni and cheese. As with the Brand Castle recall, none of the other recalled products have been linked to any reported illnesses as of the dates the recall notices were posted.
On Dec. 1, U.S. Marshals seized more than 4 million pounds of powdered milk from Valley Milk Products facility in Strasburg, VA. The Food and Drug Administration sought the enforcement help from the Marshals after finding out the company knew its facility and products were contaminated with Salmonella.
Anyone who has consumed any of the recalled products and developed symptoms of Salmonella infection should seek medical attention and tell their doctors about the possible exposure to the pathogen.
Salmonella is a microscopic organism that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Healthy people infected with Salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. In rare circumstances, infection with Salmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses.
