Fromi USA is recalling imported cheese distributed to retailers in three states because a foreign supplier found Listeria monocytogenes during routine product testing.

The Soureliette cheese and Tomme Brebis Fedou distributed by Fromi USA of New York City went to retailers in California, New York and Massachusetts, according to the recall notice posted on the Food and Drug Administration’s website.

logo Fromi cheese“Consumers who have purchased these products are urged to return them to the place of purchase for a full refund,” according to the recall notice

The recall notice did not include names of retailers that received the implicated cheese. It also did not include product photos. Consumers and retailers can identify the recalled products by looking for the following label information:

The Soureliette is in 3-pound boxes marked with one of the following expiration dates stamped on the top — 02/22/2017; 01/25/2017 or 08/02/2017; and

The Tomme Brebis Fedou is in 3-pound boxes marked with an expiration date of 02/22/2017stamped on the top.

Although no illnesses had been reported in connection with the imported cheeses as of the posting of the recall notice, it can take up to 70 days for symptoms to develop after exposure to Listeria bacteria.

Anyone who has eaten the recalled cheese should monitor themselves for symptoms and seek medical attention if they become sick.

Symptoms can include high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea. Listeria infection in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems can cause serious and sometimes fatal illnesses. Listeria infection also can cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women.
