NH Salmonella Outbreak Linked to Chicken Jerky for Dogs

Published:

At least 21 people in New Hampshire have fallen ill with Salmonella in an outbreak connected to Joey’s Jerky brand chicken jerky, a product made for dogs. The product has been voluntarily recalled by the manufacturer, Kritters Kitchen Kreations.  The contaminated jerky was sold at the following six stores in New Hampshire: America’s Pet in Hudson, Blue Seal in Bow, K9 Kaos in Dover, Osborne’s Agway in Concord, Sandy’s Pet Food Center in Concord and The Yellow Dogs Barn in Barrington.  All of the illnesses have been contracted in Merrimack and Hillsborough counties. Through investigation and interviews, the New Hampshire Department of Health and Human Services identified the jerky as the source of the outbreak.  Humans may contract Salmonella from handling contaminated food without thoroughly washing their hands. They can also contract Salmonella from interacting with infected animals.  Dogs exhibiting symptoms of Salmonella infection may appear lethargic, dehydrated and afflicted with diarrhea.
