Virginia Child Dies of E. coli O157 Illness

One child has died and at least seven others have been sickened from E. coli infections in Northeast Tennessee and Southwest Virgina.

News reports said a 2-year-old girl from Dryden, VA. died Sunday at Johnson City Medical Center, after being transferred from a Southwest Virginia community hospital.

The girl’s brother is reportedly undergoing treatment at Vanderbuilt Medical Center in Nashville. Both illnesses have been attributed to E. coli O157:H7.

Meanwhile, there are seven other confirmed cases cases of E. coli case patients from four Norhteast Tennessee counties. Northeast Regional Health Office medical director Dr. David Kirschke told TriCities.com the illnesses are being investigated as an outbreak.

The source of the outbreak has not been identified.
