Vytenis Andriukaitis is European Commissioner for Health and Food Safety for the 2014-2019 term. He is a Lithuanian and earned his medical doctor's degree in 1975 from Kaunas Institute of Medicine. He also holds a master's degree in history from Vilnius University. Before becoming health and food safety commissioner he was vice-president of the World Health Assembly in 2014. He served as Minister for Health 2012-14 and was a member of the Lithuanian Parliament from 1992-2004 and 2008-2014. Active in Lithuanian leadership earlier in his career, he was Deputy Speaker of the Lithuanian Parliament from 2001-04. Andriukaitis was a signatory of the act of independence of Lithuania and co-author of the country's constitution.
