Health representatives from the Americas have approved an updated strategy to improve food safety systems and reduce foodborne diseases.
Foodborne infections cause about 78,000 deaths in the region each year.
The Strategy and Plan of Action on Food Safety 2026-2031 provides a framework to help countries strengthen national food safety systems, science-based risk analysis, and regional cooperation in preventing, detecting and responding to risks, said the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO).
