FSA’s meat inspection charges found to be ‘unlawful’

A judge has ruled that how the Food Standards Agency (FSA) charges the meat industry for controls is unlawful.

According to the High Court judgement, at least some costs were unlawfully included in the assessment of both the FSA’s main hourly rate and the enforcement rate. The verdict also revealed FSA’s cost data slides, which provide information on how rates are calculated, did not contain enough detail to assess whether the charges were lawful.
