S&M USA Enterprise is recalling its Zhang Zhou-brand tremella because it may contain undeclared sulfites.
Tremella is a kind of fungus used in Chinese cooking.
Routine sampling by the New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets revealed the presence of sulfites in packages of the tremella, but sulfites were not listed on the label.
People who have severe sensitivity to sulfites run the risk of serious or life-threatening allergic reactions if they consume them. The consumption of 10 milligrams of sulfites per serving has been reported to elicit severe reactions in some asthmatics. Anaphylactic shock could occur in certain sulfite sensitive individuals upon ingesting 10 milligrams or more of sulfites.
No adverse reactions to the recalled tremella have been reported.
The recalled Zhang Zhou brand tremella, which was imported from China, comes in an uncoded, 150 gram plastic bag and was sold in New York and New Jersey.
