Kansas Firm Recalls Ground Beef for E. coli Risk

A Kansas-based company is recalling 50,100 pounds of ground beef because it may be contaminated with E. coli.

National Beef Packing Company of Liberal, KS issued a voluntary recall of its ground beef Wednesday after USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service found E. coli O157:H7 in a sample of product.

The company was the only supplier of the materials used in the recalled product.

Ground beef subject to the recall was produced July 18, 2013 and was distributed to retailers, wholesalers and food service distributors nationwide in 40- to 60- pound cases.

All of the recalled products bear the establishment number “EST. 208A,” located inside the USDA mark of inspection. Ground beef items subject to this recall include:

  • 10 lb. chub of “National Beef” 93/ 7 Fine Ground Beef, Product Code 0707
  • 10 lb. chub of “NatureSource” 80/20 Fine Ground Chuck, Product Code 7031

I order meat from Zaycon foods out of Spokane WA and have asked them
about this recall on their Facebook page. A gentleman had commented as
well on my post that his boxes matched the USDA inspection code given in
the article. Zaycon replied to my question on their page and said that
“their meat was not affected”, but also said (this is not current). I
don’t know what they mean by that, as this article is dated
7/31/13..After seeing their reply, I tried to comment again to let them
know the date of the article only to realize that they had deleted the
entire post and blocked me from commenting on their page… This
disturbs me greatly as all the ground beef I have ordered from Zaycon
foods the last 2 years comes from National Beef.I find it quite suspiscious that I’ve been blocked from commented and all comments regarding this recall (not just mine) have been deleted shortly after showing up on the page… Shouldn’t they be concerned about this? This is worrisome to me and I just wanted to get it out there,
as I can imagine most people that have ordered beef through them
recently will be concerned and asking questions.

The problem is probably because in today’s caustic society, it does not matter if you are guilty or innocent you will be tried in the court of public opinion. Facts be damned and somebody who has an ax to grind can destroy your perfectly safe and legitimate business from their mom’s basement.

Zaycon Foods is and is always concerned about the safety of its customers and has taken all precautions to make sure that IF our beef was part of the recall we would let our customers know immediately. We are not a part of that recall and that has been confirmed by National Beef. Thank you for your concern and we hope you enjoy your awesome ground beef!!!

I’m not sure what you’re referring to. I can see a ton of comments and questions about the recall on the Zacon page. However here are some things they have posted for your own clarification and peace of mind. “We just wanted to take a second to assure all of our customers that ever single case of ground beef Zaycon has sold recently and that will be sold at the remaining ground beef sales events is absolutely unaffected by the recent recall. We have spoken directly to our supplier and tracked all the beef used in Zaycon’s sales events; nothing is more important to us than the safety and well-being of our loyal customers, and you are safe with us.”
They also have several links on their page, “In the spirit of full disclosure” and how to check hamburger to see if it’s part of the recall. I hope that helps you feel better. Have a wonderful day!

Is any of this beef sold by Safeway? I purchased a package of beef last week, brought it home, divided it and froze it, so have none of the original pkg. I’m in CO.
