California law first in country to address date labels

California has become the first state to standardize sell-by dates on food labels.

The law was touted as a way to decrease food waste in the state, but it has obvious ramifications for food safety. A similar bill in New York is awaiting Gov. Kathy Hochul's signature before becoming law.
