Oreo cookies are under recall nationwide because they are incorrectly labeled — the cookies contain milk but the known allergen is not declared on the labels as required by law.
The recall by Mondelez Global LLC comes on the heels of the multinational’s Canadian division, Mondelēz Canada, expanding a recall in that country for Mr. Christie’s brand arrowroot biscuits. Consumers have reported an off taste and illnesses related to the cookies marketed as a first solid food for babies.
One allergic reaction had been reported in the United States or its territories, where the Oreo cookies were distributed, as of the Friday posting of the recall notice on the Food and Drug Administration’s website.
The Oreo recall is for original and mint flavors of Oreo Fudge Cremes cookies. People who have an allergy or severe sensitivity to milk run the risk of serious or life-threatening allergic reaction if they consume this product.
The following products are being recalled:
Oreo Fudge Cremes, Original variety (11.3 oz package) with the UPC number 0 44000 02694 3 and any of the following “best when used by” dates, which are on the bottom left corner on the back of packages:
- 19 AUG 16
- 20 AUG 16
- 14 SEP 16
- 13 OCT 16
- 14 OCT 16
- 17 OCT 16
Oreo Fudge Cremes, Mint variety (11.3 oz. package) with the UPC number 0 44000 02696 7 and any of the following “best when used by” dates:
- 20 AUG 16
- 21 AUG 16
- 14 SEP 16
- 15 SEP 16
- 16 SEP 16
- 17 OCT 16
- 18 OCT 16
“This recall is a result of analysis conducted by the FDA related to this product,” according to the recall notice.
“Consumers who have this product should not eat it and should discard any products they may have. Consumers can contact the company at 855-535-5948, 24 hours a day to get more information about the recall.”
