Report shows deficiencies in FDA staffing

A new report from the Government Accountability Office says the FDA does not have enough staff to meet its oversight responsibilities.

The GAO report, issued Feb. 3, notes that the Food and Drug Administration is responsible annually for overseeing the safety of nearly $4 trillion in in food, cosmetics, medications, medical devices and tobacco products sold in the United States. As of 2024, that was about 21 cents of every dollar spent by U.S. consumers.
