Organic Celery Seed with Salmonella Risk Recalled

Swanson Health Products and its supplier, B & M Inc. of Mount Vernon, MO, are recalling whole organic celery seed because it may be contaminated with Salmonella.


B & M’s O Organics-brand celery seed is sold at all Safeway-owned stores, including Safeway, Carrs, Dominick’s, Genuardi’s, Pak ‘N Save, Pavilions, Randalls, Tom Thumb and Vons.

Swanson’s celery seed is sold at its retail store in North Dakota, over the Internet or by mail-order.

In separate news releases late Friday, the companies said they were alerted to the problem by B & M’s supplier, which they did not identify. Routine sampling had returned a test positive for Salmonella, according to B & M.

No illnesses have been reported to date in connection with the O Organics Celery seed, which was sold at stores from May 25, 2011, through Dec. 16, 2011.

O Organics Organic Celery Seed is in a 1.8 oz (51g) glass bottle with the UPC 0-7989341124-8.  Bottles with the following lot codes and “best by” dates are being recalled:

– Lot Number 1381102A Best By Date May 18, 2013

– Lot Number 2141102A Best By Date August 02, 2013

– Lot Number 2591106A Best By Date September 16, 2013

– Lot Number 2741106A  Best By Date October 01, 2013

– Lot Number 2921102A Best By Date October 19, 2013

– Lot Number 3321110A Best By Date November 28, 2013

Consumers can return the recalled celery seed to the store where it was purchased for a full refund.  For more information contact B&M, Inc. at 1-877-321-5852 Monday through Friday, 8:30 am to 4:30 pm CST or  contact Safeway directly any time at 1-800-SAFEWAY.

No illnesses have been reported to date in connection with the Swanson’s-brand celery seed, which was sold between June 16, 2011, and Dec. 16, 2011.

The recalled “Swanson Health Products Brand Celery Seed (Whole) has the code UPC 0-8761424048-0. The bottom of the bottle is marked BESTBY03JUN2013 1541102C.

The Swanson-brand celery seed was either sold at the Swanson Health Products retail store, 109 Broadway N., Fargo, ND, shipped directly to on-line or mail-order consumers, or held for pick up at Swanson Health Products headquarters.

No other Swanson spices are being recalled.

Consumers may return the recalled celery seed to Swanson Health Products headquarters in Fargo, ND, for a full refund.
