Canadian officials have ordered the recall of dozens of freshcut fruit products in connection with an outbreak of Salmonella infections.

The 69 products under recall are sold under a variety of brands. The recalls include but are not limited to cantaloupe, fruit mixes, pineapple, honeydew and watermelon in pieces, halves and other cuts.

The recalls are related to an ongoing outbreak of Salmonella infections traced to fresh cantaloupe that may also be connected to other fruit. Some of the recalled fruit does not expire until well into December.

Previous recalls related to the outbreak are:

The newly recalled fruit has may have been distributed nationwide, but is known for sure to have been sent to Alberta, British Columbia and Manitoba.

As of this past week public health officials had confirmed nine patients in the outbreak — one in Ontario and eight in British Columbia. There is a related outbreak in the United States where 43 people have been confirmed as patients. The outbreak spreads across 15 states. At least 17 people have been so sick they required hospitalization. Malichita and other brands of brand cantaloupe have been recalled in the United States.

Consumers are urged to take the following action:

  • Check to see if you have recalled products
  • Do not consume, serve, use, sell, or distribute recalled products
  • Recalled products should be thrown out or returned to the location where they were purchased
  • Consumers who are unsure if they have purchased the recalled product are advised to contact their retailer

About Salmonella infections

Food contaminated with Salmonella bacteria does not usually look, smell, or taste spoiled. Anyone can become sick with a Salmonella infection. Infants, children, seniors, and people with weakened immune systems are at higher risk of serious illness because their immune systems are fragile, according to the CDC.

Anyone who has eaten any products and developed symptoms of Salmonella infection should seek medical attention. Sick people should tell their doctors about the possible exposure to Salmonella bacteria because special tests are necessary to diagnose salmonellosis. Salmonella infection symptoms can mimic other illnesses, frequently leading to misdiagnosis.

Symptoms of Salmonella infection can include diarrhea, abdominal cramps, and fever within 12 to 72 hours after eating contaminated food. Otherwise, healthy adults are usually sick for four to seven days. In some cases, however, diarrhea may be so severe that patients require hospitalization.

Older adults, children, pregnant women, and people with weakened immune systems, such as cancer patients, are more likely to develop a severe illness and serious, sometimes life-threatening conditions.

Some people get infected without getting sick or showing any symptoms. However, they may still spread the infections to others.

Further, when we asked if they documented the frequency of their verification activities, they did not provide an answer or any further records of this verification activity. In addition, while they may rely on third-party food safety audits as part of their foreign supplier verification activities, they must ensure the audit considers applicable FDA food safety regulations. For their foreign supplier (redacted), located in (redacted), which is their supplier for their Strawberry Syrup and Blueberry Syrup products, they provided an audit certificate performed by (redacted). While the certificate states that their supplier met the requirements of “Global Standard for Food Safety Issue 6: July 2011”, there is no indication that the audit considered applicable FDA food safety regulations and information relevant to the foreign supplier’s compliance with those regulations. Additionally, there is no indication that they reviewed or assessed the results of this audit using a qualified individual. The firm must also promptly review and assess the results of any third-party audit that constitutes a verification activity, document their review and assessment of the results of such activity, and take appropriate action if the results do not provide adequate assurances that the hazards requiring a control have been significantly minimized or prevented. The field in their FSVP for their Strawberry Syrup and Blueberry Syrup products, imported from their foreign supplier (redacted), located in (redacted), which indicates whether such products have an applicable food safety audit or certification, was not completed. FDA notes that the audit certificate for this supplier lists an expiry date of Jan. 19, 2021. When FDA investigators inquired about the expired audit certificate, the firm informed them that this was the most updated third-party audit and that they did not have other documents of verification activities for these products.

Consumer Reports is out with a new analysis of what it describes as risky foods consumers should know about.

The list was compiled after the organization looked at data from 2017 through 2022. The researchers focused on widely consumed foods that had recalls during the study period. They did not include recalled food related to allergens or extraneous materials. The report ranked recalls based on how many people died or became ill, as well as how widespread the outbreaks were and how many times a food was recalled.

The 10 foods that made the list are:

  • Leafy greens
  • Deli cheese and meat
  • Ground beef
  • Onions
  • Turkey
  • Chicken
  • Papayas
  • Peaches
  • Cantaloupe
  • Flour

“We aren’t saying people need to avoid these foods entirely, said Brian Ronholm, director of food policy at Consumer Reports, who lead the analysis.

“After all, these foods are usually safe and many of them are in fact import parts of a healthy diet.” Instead, he says, the list underscores the “importance of following best food safety practices with all of your foods, including knowing how to track and respond to food recalls when they happen.”

To help reduce risk to consumers, government should engage in more oversight from federal regulators, according to the report. Inspecting and monitoring farms and feedlots and being given more authority to address critical risk factors as well as an enhanced ability to track tainted food would go a long way in making America’s food supply safer, Consumer Reports leaders say.

They use a letter sent by Sen. Dick Durbin, D-IL, to FDA Commissioner Robert Califf in February as an example of the scope of the problem. The letter stated that there are more than 81,000 registered food facilities in the country and all fall under FDA’s jurisdiction. The number of inspections dropped 60 percent from 2011 to 2021 with 10,635 inspections compared to 4,535, respectively.

On the up side, the FDA has made progress on the Food Traceability Rule that requires food producers, processors, packers, distributors, grocery stores and some restaurants to devise traceability plans so they can track where food comes from and where it goes. The rule becomes effective Jan. 20, 2026.

Good news from industry includes the issuance of new guidelines from the Leafy Greens Marketing Associations in California and Arizona. The guidelines include how close growers can plant crops to places where cattle are raised to preharvest testing requirements.

On the retail front, three major chains — Costco, Wegmans and Whole Foods — have launched programs that require that certain leafy greens products to be tested for pathogens before they can be shipped to their stores.

Details on Top 10 concerning products

Click on chart to enlarge.

Leafy greens — Products that have been recalled include romaine lettuce and bagged salads because of contamination with E. Coli and Listeria. It is difficult to avoid pathogens on these products because they are usually eaten raw, without a kill step. Consumer Reports found that leafy greens were behind the most deaths and the second largest number of recalls and outbreaks with 50. By comparison, there were 30 for chicken, turkey and ground beef combined. There were 11 deaths and 614 illnesses attributed to leafy greens. More than 4.9 million pounds of products were recalled. To lessen their chances of becoming ill from leafy greens, Consumer Reports says consumers should consider buying whole head lettuce and removing outer leaves where pathogens are often found. Rinsing fresh produce to remove dirt and debris is a good idea but doesn’t remove pathogens such as bacteria.

Cheeses and deli meat — Products that have been recalled include sausage, salami, ham, lunch meats, sliced cheeses and soft cheeses including brie and queso fresco. The main reason for the recalls has been contamination with Listeria, according to Consumer Reports. Listeria can survive freezing temperatures, making deli coolers no match for it. The equipment used for slicing deli meats and cheeses is difficult to clean and can cross contaminate large amounts of food with very small amounts of bacteria. Listeria is a particularly dangerous pathogen with nine out of 10 people infected from it requiring hospitalization. The best advice is to avoid deli meats and cheeses and buy prepackaged versions instead, according to Consumer Reports. Deli cheeses and meats caused seven deaths and 409 illnesses. There were more than16.9 million pounds recalled.

Ground beef — This popular form of protein caused two outbreaks and 643 illnesses. More than 13.7 million pounds were recalled. Salmonella and E. Coli were the pathogens behind the problems. Part of the problem is that one piece of contaminated beef can contaminate large quantities of meat when it is ground together. There is less of a risk from whole cuts of meat, such as steak, because bacteria on the outer area are easily killed when cooked properly, unless the meat has been tenderized, which drags surface contaminants into it. To minimize contamination at home is making sure ground beef is cook to an internal temperature of 160 degrees F. Do not measure temperature by looking or touching the meat; use a meat thermometer.

Onions — “Here’s the first big surprise in our list,” according to the Consumer Reports document. “How did they end up here? Mostly because of two very large recalls of red, white and yellow onions due to Salmonella in 2020 and 2021.” Together the two recalls were linked to 2,167 patients, hospitalizing 427. There were more than 78 million pounds of onions recalled. The FDA found that contaminated irrigation water was the most likely cause of the problem. To help minimize risks from onions, consumers should always cook them well and avoid buying ones that are bruised or have gouges or other damage.

Chicken and Turkey — Salmonella caused the recall of chicken and poultry, including ground whole and parts. There was one death related to turkey and two for chicken. Turkey caused 398 illnesses while chicken caused 190. There were more than 389,000 pounds of turkey recalled. There were more than 195,000 pounds of chicken recalled. Ground poultry has the same dangers as ground beef. But unlike whole cuts of beef, whole birds and parts are likely to be contaminated with Salmonella because it is particularly widespread. Complicating the situation is the defeathering process, which can spread the bacteria. Poultry is also handled more than beef and that can cause more cross contamination. Also, chickens and turkeys are also usually raised in crowded, filthy conditions. Finally, producers can legally sell poultry that is contaminated with Salmonella even if they know it is contaminated. To help minimize risk from chicken and turkey, consumers can keep it separate from other foods while shopping and at home. It should also be cooked to an internal temperature of 165 degrees F. Also, poultry should not be washed or rinsed because that can spread microscopic water droplets around the kitchen and cross contaminate virtually anything.

Papayas, Peaches and Melons — Recalled products included whole cantaloupes, papayas and peaches, but precut cantaloupe, honeydew melons and watermelon were also problems. Papayas were responsible for 2 deaths and 332 illnesses. More than 600,000 pounds were recalled. Peaches were responsible for 101 sicknesses but no deaths were confirmed. More than 113 million pounds were recalled. Cantaloupe was behind 302 illnesses but no deaths were reported. More than 279,000 “retail units” were recalled with varying weights. Salmonella was the pathogen behind all of the outbreaks and recalls for these fruits. Consumer Reports says a likely route of contamination for peaches is animal feedlots and the dust they produce. Cantaloupes and other melons are often contaminated during the cutting process. As with ground meat and bagged salad, the commingling of contaminated fruit with clean fruit is a problem. Tools to cut melons are also a vector for cross contamination. For papayas the risk seems to be most severe with fruit imported from Mexico, underscoring the difficulty the Food and Drug Administration can have inspecting production areas outside of the United States, according to Consumer Reports. Consumers are best off not buying precut fruits and vegetables. When buying fresh produce, avoid bruised or damaged ones. Washing produce can remove dirt and other debris, but it does not remove bacteria.

Flour — Raw flour and the dough and batter made with it is dangerous. Salmonella and E. Coli have been found raw flour and have sickened at least 44 people, not including a new outbreak of Salmonella infections just reported by the FDA with 12 people from coast to coast infected. Wheat can become contaminated by a variety of things in the fields and that contamination can be spread to large amounts of flour through the milling process. Consumers should not let children play with raw flour and no one should eat even small portions of raw batter or dough.

The Environmental Working Group has come out with its “Dirty Dozen” list of fruits and vegetables, with strawberries topping the list again.

The group has compiled its list for several years to highlight produce with pesticide residues. All of the fresh fruits and vegetables on the list have residues below the legal limits but are culled from a list of thousands of tests by the USDA.

This year the Environmental Working Group, EWG, says a single strawberry tested positive for 22 different pesticides. The EWG suggests that consumers buy organic fruits and vegetables to avoid such situations. Some pesticides are approved for use on organic crops.

“Strawberries aren’t the only problematic produce item. 90 percent of blueberry samples were contaminated with toxic pesticide residues, including pesticides linked to cancer and nervous system harm,” according to the EWG.

“Among the 54 pesticides found on blueberries were several bee-killing neonic pesticides. Not only have these pesticides been linked to the massive decline in bee populations worldwide, they’ve also been linked to neurological damage in children.”

The organization says 75 percent of non-organic fruits and vegetables sold in the U.S. are “riddled” with potentially toxic agricultural chemicals. Some of the pesticides detected have been banned in the U.S. or Europe because of concerns about how they harm people.

“Despite the abundance of science linking exposure to pesticides with serious health issues, a potentially toxic cocktail of concerning chemicals continues to taint many of the non-organic fruits and vegetables are eaten by consumers,” said Alexis Temkin, EWG toxicologist.

EWG’s analysis of the latest fruit and vegetable is from testing data from the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. The 2023 edition includes data from 46,569 samples of 46 fruits and vegetables, covering 251 different pesticides.

“Everyone – adults and kids – should eat more fruits and vegetables, whether organic or not,“ Temkin said. “A produce-rich diet provides many health benefits.

“But in the ongoing absence of meaningful federal oversight, consumers concerned about pesticide exposure can use EWG’s Shopper’s Guide to Pesticides in Produce to navigate the produce aisle in ways that work best for them and their families.”

The fruits and vegetables on EWG’s Dirty Dozen for this year are:

1. Strawberries
2. Spinach
3. Kale, collard, and mustard greens
4. Peaches
5. Pears
6. Nectarines
7. Apples
8. Grapes
9. Bell and hot Peppers
10. Cherries
11. Blueberries
12. Green Beans

The group also compiles a list of what it considers to be the cleanest produce in terms of pesticide residues. This year the Clean 15 are:

1. Avocados
2. Sweet corn*
3. Pineapple
4. Onions
5. Papaya*
6. Sweet peas (frozen)
7. Asparagus
8. Honeydew melon
9. Kiwi
10. Cabbage
11. Mushrooms
12. Mangoes
13. Sweet Potatoes
14. Watermelon
15. Carrots

* Some sweet corn, papaya, and summer squash sold in the United States is produced from genetically modified seeds. The EWG recommends that consumers buy organic varieties of these crops if they want to avoid genetically modified produce.

About Listeria infections
Food contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes may not look or smell spoiled but can still cause serious and sometimes life-threatening infections. Anyone who has eaten any recalled products and developed symptoms of Listeria infection should seek medical treatment and tell their doctors about the possible Listeria exposure.

Also, anyone who has eaten any of the recalled products should monitor themselves for symptoms during the coming weeks because it can take up to 70 days after exposure to Listeria for symptoms of listeriosis to develop.

Symptoms of Listeria infection can include vomiting, nausea, persistent fever, muscle aches, severe headache, and neck stiffness. Specific laboratory tests are required to diagnose Listeria infections, which can mimic other illnesses.

Pregnant women, the elderly, young children, and people such as cancer patients who have weakened immune systems are particularly at risk of serious illnesses, life-threatening infections, and other complications. Although infected pregnant women may experience only mild, flu-like symptoms, their infections can lead to premature delivery, infection of the newborn, or even stillbirth.

The United Kingdom has assessed the safety of imported seafood as part of an annual operation targeting illicit food and drinks.

Suffolk Coastal Port Health Authority (SCPHA) took part in Operation Opson XI, which is coordinated by Interpol and Europol, by analyzing food and beverages based on intelligence from the National Food Crime Unit (NFCU), which is part of the Food Standards Agency (FSA).

Almost 27,000 tons of food and 15 million liters of beverages were seized globally between December 2021 and May 2022.

In the UK, there were more than 400 checks mainly on fish, seafood, and alcohol. SCPHA sampled 14 tuna, prawn, and squid products imported to the Port of Felixstowe. Officials looked for nitrates and nitrites, irradiated items, and declaration of species.

Lack of traceability

Simon Rowell, technical lead for products of animal origin at SCPHA, said: “This year, as part of the UK’s contribution to the global operation, the NFCU asked us to take samples of tuna, prawn, and squid products to look for traces of nitrates and nitrites, irradiation and undeclared species, respectively, which they identified as areas of concern.”

Officials found an undeclared Swordtip squid mixed with Indian Ocean squid.

“If a species isn’t certified, there’s no health certification to guarantee how it was caught, handled, packaged, stored, and transported, including whether it’s hygienic, free of residues, and kept at the required temperature. This lack of traceability can also be a result of illegal fishing,” said Rowell.

Giles Chapman, head of analysis at the FSA’s National Food Crime Unit, said checks involved sampling and other approaches.

“While the results of this year’s operation have not identified high levels of serious fraudulent activity, we remain vigilant to wider threats of food fraud. Along with Food Standards Scotland, we’ll continue working in partnership with councils, port health authorities, and organizations like Europol to protect consumers from unsafe or inauthentic food and drink,” he said.

German and Norwegian operations

In Germany, species substitution and undeclared water addition in fish, crustaceans, and mollusks were in focus.

Overall, 72 of the 443 products analyzed raised potential suspicion of food fraud. Abnormalities were detected in 40 of 298 samples tested for added water. The use of illicit or undeclared additives was found in 10 out of 218 samples. In 13 of 232 samples, concerns were highlighted about inconsistencies in the declaration. Another 20 products had issues because of other misleading information.

The Norwegian Food Safety Authority (Mattilsynet) tested for illegal use of nitrite in Norwegian smoked salmon. Nitrite is used as a preservative but can also maintain the color of products. One of 25 samples had traces of nitrite but deliberate use or fraud was not identified by officials.

Norwegian Customs (Tolletaten) found fake vodka packaging in May and July.

Officials uncovered 17 packages with 1,020 flat-packed cartons with the Jelzin Vodka brand. Cartons were under a blanket in the back seat of a Lithuanian-registered car. Jelzin Vodka confirmed the packaging was not authentic and two Lithuanian citizens were arrested.

In Rwanda, seized products included honey, alcoholic and soft beverages, biscuits, and powdered milk. Others items were poorly packaged, including meat, and locally produced illicit alcohol. Ten people were arrested. Of 430 production plants and pharmacies visited during the operation, 99 either had no license or were still operating despite it has expired.

Keswick Creamery at Carrock Farms LLC of Newburg, PA, is recalling various raw and pasteurized cheese products because all products manufactured by the firm have the potential to be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes.

The recalled products were distributed to farm stores and farmers markets in Washington DC, Maryland, Virginia and Pennsylvania. The recall was initiated on Aug. 25 and is ongoing.

Consumers should not consume recalled products.

Also, anyone who has eaten any of the recalled product should monitor themselves for symptoms during the coming weeks because it can take up to 70 days after exposure to Listeria for symptoms of listeriosis to develop.

Whether as a hiking snack or part of a child’s lunch, fruit leather is a product loved for its convenience. But according to the Environmental Working Group (EWG),  fruit leathers can contain high concentrations of pesticides and consumers should choose fruit that is both organic and fresh — not dried.

In 2021 and 2022, EWG commissioned laboratory tests of 37 samples of organic and non-organic fruit leather from 10 brands and 30 samples of dried fruit from 16 brands, including fruit leather from 365 Whole Foods Market, Bear, Bob Snail, Good & Gather, Stretch Island, That’s It and Trader Joe’s.

The high concentrations of pesticides are because agricultural chemicals are sprayed on the fruit from which the fruit leather is made. Different types of fresh fruit vary considerably in the amounts of residue they contain.

Apples are a common ingredient and the first ingredient listed in many of the different flavors EWG analyzed. Fresh apples typically contain high amounts of pesticide residue, according to EWG’s Shopper’s Guide.

Dried fruit may be a good alternative to fruit leather for consumers concerned about pesticide residues, according to the report. The group’s testing found that conventional dried cranberries, dates, figs, mangoes and prunes had non-detectable levels of pesticides. The highest levels of pesticides were found on dried strawberries, raisins, cherries and apples.

What testing found
EWG tests found that conventional fruit leather may contain residue from the highest number of pesticides. This was the case with samples from Stretch Island and Bob Snail, which each had at least one sample that contained residues from more than 10 different pesticides.

Samples from That’s It, Stretch Island and Trader Joe’s contained the highest total concentration of pesticides, on average.

EWG advises consumers to choose fresh fruit, especially pineapple, papaya, honeydew melon, kiwi, cantaloupe, mango and watermelon.
