# Source unknown as Salmonella sickens 13 in Denmark

More than a dozen people have fallen ill as part of a Salmonella outbreak in Denmark.

The Statens Serum Institut (SSI) has recorded 13 cases of Salmonella Typhimurium between Aug. 4 and 13\. The source is not yet known.

Eight women and five men are sick. Patients are between 14 and 83 years old with a median age of 31.

Four cases live in Syddanmark, two in Sjælland, and one in Hovedstaden. Nordjylland and Midtjylland have three cases each.

SSI, the Danish Veterinary, Food, Agriculture and Fisheries Agency, and the National Food Institute are trying to find the source of the outbreak.

SSI is responsible for whole genome sequencing isolates from patients and interviews with sick people to help identify the vehicle of infection.

Whole genome sequencing of bacteria isolated from patients shows they all belong to sequence type 19 and that they are closely genetically related. This means there is likely to be a common source of infection.

In May and June, the State Serum Institut registered 26 cases of monophasic Salmonella Typhimurium with a different sequence type.

Patients were 12 males and 14 females. They were between 8 and 81 years old with a median age of 45.

Despite the use of whole genome sequencing and patient interviews, officials were unable to find what caused the monophasic Salmonella Typhimurium sequence type 34 outbreak.

Denmark recorded 1,051 Salmonella infections in 2025 and 13 outbreaks.
