Tests performed on Nestlé brand Maggi noodles in India have [reportedly](http://www.npr.org/sections/thetwo-way/2015/06/03/411776574/nestl-india-in-hot-water-over-reports-of-excess-lead-in-noodle-soup?ref=foodsafetynews.com) shown them to contain “unsafe and hazardous” amounts of lead, leading to a nationwide ban last week. Over the weekend, a Mumbai court rejected Nestle’s appeal for a stay of the ban.

Nestlé is now recalling the noodles from shops while maintaining that its noodles are safe. The company claims that it has carried out its own tests on more than 1,000 batches of noodles, along with supplying third-party laboratories with another 600 batches. Some Indian citizens have taken to burning the dried noodle packages as a demonstration of disapproval. Meanwhile, the Indian Medical Association has announced plans to form a [safe food consortium](http://www.thehindu.com/news/cities/Thiruvananthapuram/ima-to-form-safe-food-consortium/article7312118.ece?ref=foodsafetynews.com) to create awareness in the country about what constitutes safe food. The organization plans to prepare a set of guidelines to widely disseminate to the Indian public.
