# Illness Outbreak Strikes 55 People Staying at Homeless Shelter in Salt Lake City

At least 50 people were taken to hospitals Sunday night after an apparent foodborne illness outbreak struck a homeless shelter in Salt Lake City, UT, according to local news station [FOX 13](http://fox13now.com/2015/05/31/50-to-60-taken-to-hospitals-after-possible-food-poisoning-at-homeless-shelter/?ref=foodsafetynews.com). Those sickened, which included men, women and three children from the Road Home shelter, were experiencing vomiting and nausea. None was reported to be in serious condition, and, as of Monday afternoon, all but one has [recovered](http://www.startribune.com/about-50-get-suspected-food-poisoning-at-homeless-shelter/305672531/?ref=foodsafetynews.com). While some of those sickened were transported by ambulance, the number of people suddenly experiencing symptoms was so high that many had to be transported by bus to the hospital. The local health department is currently investigating the source of the outbreak. As of now, no source is known. The shelter did not serve meals over the weekend, and many of those staying there were [said](http://www.startribune.com/about-50-get-suspected-food-poisoning-at-homeless-shelter/305672531/?ref=foodsafetynews.com) to be eating at nearby kitchens or other facilities.
