The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has announced that it will be extending the comment period on the [sanitary transportation](https://www.foodsafetynews.com/fda-announces-fsma-sanitary-transport-rule-extends-animal-food-rule-deadline/) rule issued under the Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA). The comment period was originally set to end May 31, but the deadline has been extended to June 30 in response to requests for additional time. The rule is the seventh and final major rule of FSMA. It was proposed at the end of January and will require shippers, receivers and carriers who transport food by motor or rail vehicles to take steps to prevent the contamination of human and animal food during transportation. FDA has already held [three public meetings](http://www.fda.gov/Food/GuidanceRegulation/FSMA/ucm383763.htm?ref=foodsafetynews.com) on the rule. At the meeting in College Park, MD, the issue of whether the rule’s exemption for live animals extends to [shellfish](https://www.foodsafetynews.com/shellfish-causing-some-confusion-in-fsma-sanitary-transportation-rule/) was brought to the agency’s attention. The final rule is [required to be released](https://www.foodsafetynews.com/fsma-gets-new-deadlines-for-final-rules/) by March 31, 2016.
