# 15 Sick with Salmonella in Michigan

The Muskegon County Health Department is [investigating](http://www.muskegonhealth.net/news/131112%5Fsalmonella.pdf?ref=foodsafetynews.com) a Salmonella outbreak that has sickened at least 15 people. One of the victims lives in Ottawa County and the rest are Muskegon residents. Public health staff are currently interviewing those who are ill to gather information about the source of the outbreak. Most persons infected with Salmonella develop diarrhea, fever, and abdominal cramps 12 to 72 hours after infection. The illness usually lasts four to seven days, and most people recover without treatment. However, in some cases, the diarrhea may be so severe that the patient needs to be hospitalized. Anyone who is experiencing symptoms of Salmonella infection is encouraged to contact their healthcare provider for testing.
