# Six Cases of Salmonella Linked to Annual Bean Day Fundraiser in Alabama

As of Monday afternoon, at least [six cases of Salmonella poisoning](http://www.alabamanewsday.com/news/15932-six-confirmed-cases-of-salmonella-affecting-bean-day-patrons.html?ref=foodsafetynews.com) have been confirmed in Limestone County, AL, and officials believe those who fell ill may have contracted it at an annual Bean Day fundraising lunch held Friday in Athens. “We have seen dozens of people Saturday, Sunday and today with mainly diarrhea but also vomiting and nausea,” Athens-Limestone Hospital CEO Kelli Powers said. “There are about 24 people in our waiting room right now who have been waiting about an hour with symptoms.” She added that none of those with confirmed cases had been admitted to the hospital, only treated for symptoms. Powers said the Alabama Department of Public Health has been notified and would be testing food leftover from the bean dinner. Symptoms of Salmonella infection include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and abdominal cramps. Symptoms can last as long as a week. Anyone with those symptoms should see a healthcare provider as soon as possible.
