# Salmonella Outbreak at Senior Care Center Leaves 5 Hospitalized

An outbreak of Salmonella linked to the Blue Hill Care Center in central Nebraska has sickened an estimated 19 people, 5 of whom were hospitalized. One person, a visitor to the elderly home, remains in the hospital, according to the [South Heartland District Health Department](http://southheartlandhealth.org/?p=1267&ref=foodsafetynews.com), which is conducting the investigation in conjunction with the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services. The other 4 patients, all residents, have been released. To date, there have been 17 cases confirmed as part of the outbreak with 2 more suspected among residents, staff and visitors of the Blue Hill Care Center, a care facility for the elderly in Webster, NE that accommodates 62 residents. Illnesses began in early August, according to South Heartland’s Director Michele Bever, as reported by the [San Francisco Chronicle](http://www.sfgate.com/?ref=foodsafetynews.com). investigators continue to look for the source of contamination. Symptoms of salmonellosis, the disease caused by a Salmonella infection, most commonly include fever, diarrhea, but can also include bloody diarrhea, vomiting, headache and body aches.
