A 4-year-old girl sickened with E. coli O157:H7 at a customer appreciation picnic for a Germantown, Ohio business is in critical condition after developing hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS), a severe kidney disease associated with E. coli infection. The Dayton & Montgomery County Health Department confirmed the girl’s connection to the outbreak at Neff’s Lawn Care, which has now sickened at least 62 picnic attendees. Of those ill, 13 have been hospitalized and 11 have tested positive for the same strain of E. coli, said health department spokesman Bill Wharton. Wharton said health officials are still investigating the source of the outbreak.
