# Canada E. coli Death May Be Linked to Walnuts

Quebec’s health ministry told the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) Thursday that one person in the province has died of an E. coli infection that may be connected to eating tainted walnuts.

So far, the Public Health Agency of Canada has reported [14 cases of E. coli illness](http://www.inspection.gc.ca/english/corpaffr/recarapp/2011/20110403e.shtml?ref=foodsafetynews.com), including nine in Quebec. The outbreak has been linked to walnuts distributed by Quebec-based Amira Enterprises, which recalled the nuts. Health officials say 10 people been hospitalized and three people developed hemolytic uremic syndrome, an illness associated with E. coli infections that can result in kidney failure.

The recalled walnuts were imported from the U.S., according to an alert from the Canadian Food Inspection Agency.
