Four people became ill, and one was hospitalized, after contracting E.coli infections from eating smoked ready-to-eat meat products processed at Zillman Meat Market in Wausau, WI, according to an announcement from the Marathon County Health Department Thursday.

The custom smoked meat products were made from wild game processed from Sept. 30, 2010, through Nov. 13, 2010.

An investigation to determine the original source and extent of the contamination is being conducted with the Zillman Meat Market’s cooperation by the Marathon County Health Department, and the Wisconsin departments of agriculture and health services.

Health authorities advised consumers not to eat any ready-to-eat smoked meat products purchased from the market, including both custom and retail products. Consumers who purchased the smoked meat products were asked to keep them until health authorities have further information.
