         <title>Big Spinach Recall with No Public Notice</title>
         <description><![CDATA[<div>On New Year's Eve 2011, a Texas company recalled&nbsp;228,360 lbs. -- 114 tons -- of spinach because it tested positive for E. coli O157:H7.</div><div><br /></div><div>That Class I recall -- which the U.S. Food and Drug Administration defines as "a situation in which there is a reasonable probability that the use of or exposure to a violative product will cause serious adverse health consequences or death" -- was revealed this week as an item in the <a href="http://www.fda.gov/Safety/Recalls/EnforcementReports/ucm291293.htm">FDA&nbsp;enforcement report</a> for February 8.</div><div><br /></div><div>Credit microbiologist and blogger Phyllis Entis for spotting what she calls a stealth recall, and explaining its significance on her <a href="http://efoodalert.net/">eFoodAlert website</a>.</div><div><br /></div><div><div>"I realize that not all recalls are created equal, and that not all recalls require public notification. But I cannot understand the rationale behind NOT publicizing a Class I Hazard recall of a ready-to-eat item of produce that may be contaminated with a potentially lethal pathogen," Entis wrote. &nbsp;"Would anyone care to explain this to me?"</div></div><div><br /></div><div>The potentially contaminated spinach from Tiro Tres Farms of Eagle Pass, TX&nbsp;was distributed in Colorado, Kentucky, Massachusetts and Pennsylvania, and in Canada in Ontario and Quebec.</div><div><br /></div><div>FDA and the Canadian Food Inspection Agency did not publish public notices of this recall in December or January - and still have not -- and the FDA enforcement report did not say whether there were any illnesses linked to the recalled spinach.</div><div><br /></div><div>According to the enforcement report, Tiro Tres Farms notified its own customers of the recall by letter on Dec. 31, 2011, but the FDA report does not indicate if any of the spinach was sold by retailers.</div><div><br /></div><div>The recall was of Robert's S 1 cut leaf "Curly" spinach packed in 30 lb. totes with no specific type of labeling, except for a small sticker label identifying the "pup" container that identified the harvest date and the field in Uvalde, TX. Harvest dates were Nov. 21, 22, 23, 25, 28 and 29, 2011, one month before the recall letter was sent.&nbsp;</div><div><br /></div> ]]></description>

         <title>Another Recall of Salad With Hard-Cooked Eggs</title>
         <description><![CDATA[<div>In another recall related to <a href="http://www.foodsafetynews.com/2012/02/wegmans-recalls-hard-cooked-eggs-salads/">hard-cooked eggs that may be contaminated with Listeria</a>, Bost Distributing Company of Bear Creek, NC, doing business as Harold Food Company, is withdrawing approximately 1,200 pounds of chicken salad products.</div><div><br /></div><div>The recall is one of many resulting from a recall by Minnesota-based Michael Foods, which produced the cooked eggs at its Wakefield, NE facility.</div><div><br /></div><div>There have been no confirmed reports of illnesses associated with the eggs.</div><div><br /></div><div>The recall is for&nbsp;30-lb. boxes of Harold Food Co. Grand Strand Deluxe Chicken Salad with&nbsp;sell-by dates of 2/15/2012 and the establishment number P-20479.</div><div><br /></div><div>The products were sent to a distributor in South Carolina for further distribution to retail establishments in North Carolina and South Carolina. The chicken salad products may have been repackaged as sandwiches under a brand other than Harold Food Co. and no longer bear the identifying information listed above.&nbsp;</div><div><br /></div><div>Consumers with questions about the recall should contact Bost Distributing Company's General Manager, Jeff Bennett, at 919-775-5931.&nbsp;</div> ]]></description>

         <title>Chicken Salad Sandwiches Another Egg-Related Recall</title>
         <description><![CDATA[<div>Grand Strand Sandwich Company of Longs, SC is recalling some of its chicken salad sandwiches from convenience stores in the Southwest after its distributor recalled the chicken salad used to make them.</div><div><br /></div><img alt="countryharvestdeli-320.jpg" src="http://www.foodsafetynews.com/countryharvestdeli-320.jpg" width="320" height="176" class="mt-image-right" style="float: right; margin: 0 0 20px 20px;" /><div>The recall is the latest in the string of recalls that began January 26 when Michael Foods revealed that some of its hard-cooked eggs could be contaminated with Listeria.</div><div><br /></div><div>No illnesses have been associated with the hard-cooked eggs distributed by Michael Foods or any of the products made with the eggs.</div><div><br /></div><div>In a <a href="http://www.foodsafetynews.com/2012/02/wegmans-recalls-hard-cooked-eggs-salads/">news release</a> Wednesday, Grand Strand wrote that its recall "came about when Bost Distributing, our chicken salad manufacturer, bought some of the hard-cooked eggs that were produced (and later recalled) by Michael Foods.          <title>E. Coli Infection in Canada Linked to Kibbeh Beef</title>
         <description><![CDATA[<div>One person has been confirmed infected with E. coli O157:H7 linked to ground beef now being recalled in Canada.</div><div><br /></div><div>The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) and New Middleast Supermarket of Ottawa, ON are warning the public not to consume finely ground beef used for kibbeh that was sold by the stores on Dec. 28 and 29, 2011.</div><div><br /></div><div>Kibbeh is a Middle Eastern dish of minced meat shaped into balls or patties.</div><div><br /></div><div>The ground beef, which may still be in home freezers, was served from the supermarket's fresh meat counter in plastic bags wrapped with paper. The packages may be unlabeled.</div><div><br /></div><div>Consumers are advised to contact the retailer if they are unsure whether they have the recalled beef stored in their home freezer.</div><div><br /></div><div>For more information contact New Middleast Supermarket, 1755 Bank Street, Ottawa at 613-526-3423.</div><div><br /></div><div>Food contaminated with E. coli O157:H7 may not look or smell spoiled. Consumption of food contaminated with these bacteria my cause serious and potentially life-threatening illnesses. Symptoms include severe abdominal pain and bloody diarrhoea. Some people may have seizures or strokes and some may need blood transfusions and kidney dialysis. Others may live with permanent kidney damage. In severe cases of illness, people may die.</div> ]]></description>

         <title>Mislabeled PB &amp; J Sandwich Bars Recalled</title>
         <description><![CDATA[<div>A California-based company is voluntarily recalling 8,150 cartons of its Jammy Sammy Strawberry Jam &amp; Peanut Butter Flavor Snack Size Sandwich Bars due to a mislabeled inner wrapper.&nbsp;</div><div><br /></div><div>Some of the individually-wrapped packages within each carton are incorrectly labeled as Honey Graham or Strawberry Yogurt flavors, and therefore do not contain proper warnings about peanut product within the package. &nbsp;</div><img alt="jammy-sammy-300x300.jpg" src="http://www.foodsafetynews.com/jammy-sammy-300x300.jpg" class="mt-image-right" style="float: right; margin: 0 0 20px 20px;" height="300" width="300" /><div><br /></div><div>The cartons in question are labeled with a June 28, 2012 "best by" date and are marked with the universal product code (UPC) #89676600116 6, located on the bottom of the package. Each contains 5 individually-packaged sandwich bars.&nbsp;</div><div><br /></div><div>The product contains organic peanut flour and organic peanut extract, which are identified on the outside of the carton but not listed on the mislabeled inner wrappers.&nbsp;</div><div><br /></div><div>Jammy Sammys are produced by Revolution Foods, a company in the Nest Collective group of consumer product brands.&nbsp;</div><div><br /></div><div>"The Jammy Sammy™ product meets Nest Collective's high standard for quality, however due to a labeling error during production, we are proactively removing this product from the market" said Neil Grimmer, Founder &amp; CEO of Nest Collective in the <a href="http://www.fda.gov/Safety/Recalls/ucm290445.htm">recall notice</a>.</div><div><br /></div><div>Consumers who purchased the mislabeled product should return it to the store where they purchased it for a full refund, or contact Nest Collective at info@nestcollective.com.          <title>Hard-Cooked Egg Recall Widens</title>
         <description><![CDATA[<div>Wegmans Food Markets, Greencore USA, Allison's Gourmet Kitchens, GH Foods SW, GH Foods CA, F&amp;S Produce Co., Delhaize America, Kroger's, Bost Distributing Co., Grand Strand Sandwich Co. and Spartan Stores have been caught up in the widespread recall of hard-cooked eggs that may be contaminated with Listeria.</div><div><br /></div><div>The expanded call back is the result of the&nbsp;<a href="http://www.foodsafetynews.com/2012/02/hard-cooked-egg-recall-expands-potato-salads-included/" style="text-decoration: underline; ">recent recall by Minnesota-based Michael Foods</a>, which produced the cooked eggs at its Wakefield, NE facility.</div><div><br /></div><div>There have been no confirmed reports of illness associated with the eggs.</div><div><br /></div><div>Wegmans is recalling certain hard-cooked eggs, as well as prepared foods that contain hard-cooked eggs. Greencore is recalling chefs salad and egg salad sandwiches.&nbsp;Allison's Gourmet Kitchens is recalling certain prepared potato, macaroni, pea and egg salads.</div><div><br /></div><div>GH Foods SW is recalling Cobb salads. GH Foods CA is recalling egg salad sandwiches, F&amp;S Produce Company is recalling Cobb and spinach salads, Delhaize America is recalling potato salad and Kroger's is recalling prepared salads and sandwiches.</div><div><br /></div><div>Bost Distributing Co. (doing business as Harold Food Co.) is withdrawing chicken salad. Grand Strand Sandwich Co. is recalling chicken salad sandwiches. DeLish brand Tuna Salad on Multigrain Bread Sandwich with UPC 0 49022 51928 2 and enjoy-by dates of 1/22/12 through 2/5/12).</div><div><br /></div><div><div><b>F&amp;S Produce Co. of Deerfield, NJ is recalling</b> approximately 389 pounds of Cobb and spinach salads. The recall is of 10-oz. plastic containers of Fresh Garden Highway Spinach Salad with Bacon and&nbsp;10.75-oz plastic containers of Fresh Garden Highway Cobb Salad.</div><div><br /></div><div>The salads have sell-by dates through 2/8/2012, and bear the establishment number Est. 39897 as well as the USDA mark of inspection. They&nbsp;were distributed to a warehouse in Pennsylvania for further distribution to retail locations.</div></div><div><br /></div><div><b>Delhaize America</b> is recalling all Food Lion brand and Hannaford brand potato salads sold at Bloom, Bottom Dollar Food, Food Lion, Reid's and Sweetbay grocery stores &nbsp;with use-by dates of March 12, 13, 14 or 15, as well as Allison's Gourmet Kitchens Potato Salad (bulk sales from full service deli cases at Bloom, Food Lion, Reid's and Sweetbay stores).</div><div><br /></div><div><b>The Kroger Company</b> is recalling 7.5-oz.          <title>Allergen Alert: Sulfites in Tremella</title>
         <description><![CDATA[<div>S&amp;M USA Enterprise is recalling its Zhang Zhou-brand tremella because it may contain undeclared sulfites.</div><div><br /></div><div>Tremella is a kind of fungus used in Chinese cooking.</div><div><br /></div><div>Routine sampling by the New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets revealed the presence of sulfites in packages of the tremella, but sulfites were not listed on the label.&nbsp;</div><div><br /></div><div>People who have severe sensitivity to sulfites run the risk of serious or life-threatening allergic reactions if they consume them. The consumption of 10 milligrams of sulfites per serving has been reported to elicit severe reactions in some asthmatics.          <description><![CDATA[<div>W &amp; International Import Inc. is recalling certain sardine anchovies and dried yellow croaker imported from China because the fish were found to be uneviscerated.</div><div><br /></div><div>Fish that haven't been fully gutted -- uneviscerated -- have been linked to outbreaks of botulism poisoning, because Clostridiuim Botulinum spores are more likely to be concentrated in the viscera than any other portion of the fish.</div><div><br /></div><div>The problem was discovered during routine sampling by the New York Department of Agriculture and Markets.          <description><![CDATA[<div>One week after a company <a href="http://www.foodsafetynews.com/2012/01/listeria-fears-prompt-hard-cooked-egg-recall/">began notifying customers</a> in 34 states about potential Listeria contamination in hard-cooked eggs, the Food and Drug Administration announced that Michael Foods, Inc. is <a href="http://www.fda.gov/Safety/Recalls/ucm289920.htm">expanding its recall</a>&nbsp;of certain hard-cooked eggs.</div><div><br /></div><div>Michael Foods said it was widening the initial call back for three lot dates, announced January 26 after lab testing revealed that some of the eggs may have been contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes.&nbsp;</div><div><br /></div><div>Additional lot dates have been added, the company said, because of new evidence that a repair project in its Wakefield, Nebraska packaging room "was the likely source of the contamination."</div><div><br /></div><div>While Michael Foods said its eggs were not sold directly to retailers or consumers, the company acknowledged that food distributors and manufacturers who purchased the eggs could have used them in products sold to retail outlets, or used them in food service settings.&nbsp;</div><div><br /></div><div>A number of retailers subsequently announced their own recalls in connection with the Michael Foods recall:</div><div><br /></div><div>-- Super1Foods <a href="http://www.super1foods.com/cnt/PotatoSaladrecall.html">is recalling</a> 3 lb.          <title>Listeria Fears Prompt Hard-Cooked Egg Recall</title>
         <description><![CDATA[<div>Hard-cooked eggs that could be contaminated with Listeria are being recalled, the USDA's Food Safety and Inspection Service reported Friday, although there's been no announcement posted to the general public by the Food and Drug Administration, which has jurisdiction over the product.</div><div><br /></div><div>FSIS, in announcing<a href="http://www.foodsafetynews.com/2012/01/julienne-salad-ingredients-recalled-due-to-tainted-eggs/"> the recall of julienne meat salads</a> containing hard-cooked eggs, said eggs (a product inspected by the FDA) had tested positive for Listeria monocytogenes and were being recalled by Michael Foods Egg Products Co.</div><div><br /></div><div>In Grand Rapids, MI, Spartan Stores announced a recall of eight deli products containing hard-cooked eggs recalled by Michael Foods. The deli products, with sell-by dates of Jan. 20 through Feb. 1, include egg spread, sandwich with egg spread, small and large chef container salads, seven layer and seven layer no-meat container chef salads, and small and large no-meat container chef salads.&nbsp;In West Michigan, the recalled products were sold at D&amp;W and Family Fare. &nbsp;&nbsp;</div><div><br /></div><div>In an internal memo to institutions and other establishments it supplies, Sysco Quality Assurance said it had been notified that Michael Foods Inc. was recalling hard-cooked eggs "due to a presumptive positive for Listeria monocytogenes in specific lots of products."</div><div><br /></div><div>In Illinois, the Courier News reported that after students at Streamwood High School in the Elgin School District were served salad containing hard-cooked eggs Thursday, school administrators were notified of "a nationwide precautionary recall of GFS-brand hard-cooked eggs."</div><div><br /></div><div>Vendor Michael Foods told the district that lab testing showed the eggs could be contaminated with Listeria, and that no illnesses had been reported, according to the news report.</div><div><br /></div><div>Distributor US Foods issued an alert reporting that Michael Foods Inc. of Minnetonka, MN has issued a Class I recall on three lots of Papetti's Brand hard-cooked eggs in 25 lb. tubs: "The product was widely distributed to the food service sector during the second week of January.          <description><![CDATA[<div>Hard-cooked eggs that may be contaminated with Listeria have prompted the 18th Street Deli of Hamtramck, MI &nbsp;to recall about 118 pounds of julienne salad products that include turkey, ham and the suspect eggs.</div><div><br /></div><img alt="18thstreetdeli-219.jpg" src="http://www.foodsafetynews.com/18thstreetdeli-219.jpg" width="219" height="500" class="mt-image-right" style="float: right; margin: 0 0 20px 20px;" /><div>The eggs - from Michael Foods Egg Products Co. -- are the subject of a U.S. Food and Drug Administration recall due to contamination with Listeria monocytogenes, the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) announced Friday.</div><div><br /></div><div>The problem was discovered when 18th Street Deli was notified by one of its suppliers that hard-cooked eggs (a product inspected by the FDA) had tested positive for Listeria monocytogenes and were being recalled by Michael Foods Egg Products Co.&nbsp;</div><div><br /></div><div>18th Street Deli of Hamtramck, MI, said its recalled salad products were produced on Jan. 20, 2012 and then distributed to retail stores in Michigan and vending companies in Indiana, Michigan and Ohio.</div><div><br /></div><div>The recall is for&nbsp;9.25-ounce packages of 18th Street Deli Julienne Salad,&nbsp;18th Street Deli Julienne Salad Lite, and&nbsp;Balanced Choice Julienne Salad Lite&nbsp;that bear the establishment number P-22061 inside the USDA mark of inspection and expiration dates of 01/27/12 and 01/30/12.</div><div><br /></div><div>18th Street Deli has received no reports of illnesses associated with these recalled products.</div><div><br /></div><div>For more information contact Robert Guzzardo, head of Quality Assurance for 18th Street Deli, at 313-921-7710.&nbsp;</div><div><br /></div> ]]></description>

         <title>Turkey and Ham Sub Sandwiches Recalled Due to Listeria</title>

Thompson of Jacksonville, FL is recalling ham and turkey sub sandwiches that may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes.</div><div><br /></div><img alt="anytimedeli-350.jpg" src="http://www.foodsafetynews.com/anytimedeli-350.jpg" width="350" height="350" class="mt-image-right" style="float: right; margin: 0 0 20px 20px;" /><div>No illnesses have been reported.</div><div><br /></div><div>Routine sampling by the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services detected Listeria in some sandwiches.</div><div>&nbsp;&nbsp;</div><div>The recall is for Anytime Deli Turkey &amp; Ham Footlong Sandwiches, packaged in white butcher wrap, with the UPC 0543200194 and a best-by date of January 19 and January 22.          <title>Lunch Box Gel Packs Could Leak</title>
         <description><![CDATA[<div>A Canadian company is recalling 248,000 insulated lunch boxes because chemicals could leak from damaged freezer gel packs, according to a&nbsp;<a href="http://www.cpsc.gov/cpscpub/prerel/prhtml12/12089.html">U.S. Consumer Products Safety Commission </a>safety alert.&nbsp;</div><div><br /></div><img alt="recall_lunchbox-thumb-240xauto-3788.jpg" src="http://www.foodsafetynews.com/recall_lunchbox-thumb-240xauto-3788.jpg" width="240" height="175" class="mt-image-right" style="float: right; margin: 0 0 20px 20px;" /><div>California Innovations Inc. of Toronto said on its <a href="http://www.californiainnovations.com/">website</a>&nbsp;that the gel packs contain diethylene glycol and ethylene glycol, which can be poisonous if ingested.&nbsp;</div><div><br /></div><div>The company has received two reports of dogs chewing and ingesting the leaked gel from the lunch box. One dog died and the second was treated and recovered.&nbsp;</div><div><br /></div><div>The recalled lunch boxes, made of vinyl and polyester nylon are Ci Sport three-piece, expandable, insulated lunch box sets, which include the lunch box, an aluminum bottle and the freezer gel pack. The recalled lunch box sets have the code "1-61731-99-57" printed on one of two white labels sewn under the white fastener inside the main compartment.&nbsp;The lunch box was available in four colors: navy blue, red, black and denim blue.</div><div><br /></div><div>The gel pack is a 6-inch by 4-inch transparent plastic pouch filled with blue liquid gel.
