         <title>USDA/FSIS Chemist</title>
         <description><![CDATA[This position is located in the Risk Assessment Division in the Office of Public Health Science.&nbsp; The Risk Assessment Division consists of a Chemical Residue Risk Branch and a Microbial Risk Branch.<br /><br />The incumbent serves as a Chemist/Toxicologist in the Chemical Residue Risk Branch. In this position, you will:<br /><br />Serve as an expert in chemistry or toxicology within a multi- disciplinary team of scientists to develop quantitative food safety risk assessments for chemical hazards in meat, poultry, and egg products. &nbsp;<br /><br />Ensure that the most appropriate chemical and toxicological data and information are used within risk assessments and risk-based model developed by the Chemical Residue Risk Branch.<br /><br />Conduct short-term risk assessments and safety assessments in response to emergency incidents identified by FSIS field personnel.<br /><br />This includes serving on health evaluation boards to support the Agency's determination of food safety risk associated with chemical hazards to guide decisions regarding product recalls.<br /><br />Serve as an expert peer reviewer in the area of chemistry and toxicology and serve on interagency reviews of risk assessment and safety assessments developed in USDA, the Environmental Protection Agency, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and the Food and<br />Drug Administration.<br /><br />Monitor and evaluate the potential impact of residue/toxicological concerns in food-producing animals in HACCP based systems.<br /><br />Serve as an agency expert in chemistry and/or toxicology for the identification of new and emerging chemical and/or toxicological issues related to food safety of meat, poultry and egg products.<br /><br />Evaluates international (import/export) residue issues and provides planning and technical expertise for developing programs, policy and enforcement of residue control recommendations. Monitors and evaluates veterinary drug and pesticide approvals and cancellations nationally and internationally.<br /><br />Evaluate and/or conduct chemical or toxicological assessments on zenobiotics and other chemical/biochemical based hazards and exposure assessments to support risk analysis. Assure appropriate public health basis of proposed immediate and long-term solutions related to human exposure to hazards.<br /><br />Act as a technical liaison to plan and coordinate agency toxicological, chemical, and other multi-disciplinary projects. Represent the agency in collaborative, national or international activities.<br /><br />Provide technical reviews, reports, and position papers on issues related to chemistry and toxicology and related scientific disciplines to meet agency program needs, priorities, and initiatives.          <title>Meat and Poultry Inspector (Environmental Specialist I)</title>
         <description><![CDATA[#00218<br /><br />The Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services is seeking a qualified individual for the position of Meat and Poultry Inspector with the Office of Meat and Poultry Services. This position will be assigned to the Page County area and the successful candidate will be required to live in or convenient to the assigned territory.&nbsp; Responsibilities include enforcement of the Federal Meat Inspection Act, the Poultry Products Inspection Act and related state regulations. Duties include conducting antemortem and postmortem inspections; verification of the food safety systems in assigned meat and poultry slaughter and processing facilities; enforcement of the Humane Handling Act; collection of official samples; and completion of inspection reports. This position requires daily travel to assigned facilities.<br /><br />Qualifications:&nbsp; Requires the ability to interpret and assure compliance with regulations by analyzing and assessing findings to form logical, supportable conclusions.&nbsp; This often requires independently applying basic scientific principles, including mathematical or statistical functions, while working without direct supervision.&nbsp; Candidate must demonstrate effective interpersonal skills and strong communication skills, including the ability to prepare accurate written reports.&nbsp; Experience using Personal Computers and excellent customer service skills are required.&nbsp; Meat/poultry processing experience is helpful but not required. A degree in food science, biology or the related sciences with emphasis in microbiology is preferred; however, practical experience involving food processing, food microbiology, food chemistry or enforcement and interpretation of government regulations is acceptable. A working knowledge of Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points (HACCP) principles as applied to the meat industry is also preferred, but not required.&nbsp; Ability to distinguish colors and a valid Virginia Driver's License is required.&nbsp; Position involves considerable physical activity to include lifting, prolonged standing or sitting and working in environments with extreme temperature changes.&nbsp; Must meet requirements for federal compliance certification during probationary period or within first twelve months in position.          <description><![CDATA[The Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services is seeking a qualified individual for the position of Meat and Poultry Inspector with the Office of Meat and Poultry Services. This position will be assigned to the Page County area and the successful candidate will be required to live in or convenient to the assigned territory.&nbsp; Responsibilities include enforcement of the Federal Meat Inspection Act, the Poultry Products Inspection Act and related state regulations. Duties include conducting antemortem and postmortem inspections; verification of the food safety systems in assigned meat and poultry slaughter and processing facilities; enforcement of the Humane Handling Act; collection of official samples; and completion of inspection reports. This position requires daily travel to assigned facilities.<br /><br />Qualifications:&nbsp; Requires the ability to interpret and assure compliance with regulations by analyzing and assessing findings to form logical, supportable conclusions.&nbsp; This often requires independently applying basic scientific principles, including mathematical or statistical functions, while working without direct supervision.&nbsp; Candidate must demonstrate effective interpersonal skills and strong communication skills, including the ability to prepare accurate written reports.&nbsp; Experience using Personal Computers and excellent customer service skills are required.&nbsp; Meat/poultry processing experience is helpful but not required. A degree in food science, biology or the related sciences with emphasis in microbiology is preferred; however, practical experience involving food processing, food microbiology, food chemistry or enforcement and interpretation of government regulations is acceptable. A working knowledge of Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points (HACCP) principles as applied to the meat industry is also preferred, but not required.&nbsp; Ability to distinguish colors and a valid Virginia Driver's License is required.&nbsp; Position involves considerable physical activity to include lifting, prolonged standing or sitting and working in environments with extreme temperature changes.&nbsp; Must meet requirements for federal compliance certification during probationary period or within first twelve months in position.          <description><![CDATA[DUTIES:<br /><br />This position is located on a Forest Service Job Corps Civilian Conservation Center to conduct training sessions under a formal, organized vocational program for Culinary Arts. The incumbent serves as a training instructor, providing training to students which includes meal planning, menu scheduling, storage of food and related items, inventory maintenance, food production, sanitation, safety, operation of food-related equipment, serving, preparation for inspection, baking, special diet planning and preparation, and other food related areas.<br /><br />Develops lesson plans, and other guides required to meet the goal of training students and leading them in performing a variety of food service training activities. Training must meet the needs of culinary arts students who are at multiple levels of attainment, and meet Department of Labor requirements for a culinary arts program.<br /><br />Incumbent reviews food handling and sanitation requirements and directives, and insures proper procedures are followed in handling and storing food items. Instructs students in the proper handling and storage of food. Insures leftovers and perishable items are covered in accordance with proper sanitation, preservation requirements, and packages and containers are accurately dated. Insures that food is stored at the correct temperatures to prevent bacteria growth. Dr. Leon is an expert in food- and water-borne diseases, parasitic diseases and has laboratory and epidemiology projects in the US and in Latin America. <a href="http://www.sph.emory.edu/leonlab">http://www.sph.emory.edu/leonlab</a><br />&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp; <br /><b>Job Description: <br /><br /></b>Research Specialist will work on a field clinical trial to assess interventions that will reduce microbial contamination of fruits and vegetables in farms in Mexico. Work will involve 40% project management (study design and setup, primary field research [collection of fruits/vegetables, water samples, hand rinse samples, soil samples, interviews with farm personnel], data quality and control, outreach to farms, and industry groups) and 60% laboratory work (developing assays for microbial and viral testing of water, hand, soil samples, training of personnel in Mexico). A second project available for the candidate is analysis of rotavirus epidemiology pre and post-vaccine in Bolivia, though this will be a second priority to the Mexico project. This position is fully funded for 4 years. 10-20% of international travel (to Mexico and Bolivia) is expected. This project is key in the area of food safety, especially in safety of fruits and vegetables, because methodology and findings from this project will serve to drive future research methodology, risk hazard models, and USDA policy in the US.<br />&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;<br />Compensation: $39,000-$41,000 based on experience<br /><br />Qualifications: MUST be fluent in Spanish, have an MPH or PHD degree, laboratory experience, international field experience, and be willing to devote 10-20% effort for international travel (Mexico &amp; Bolivia). Schedules assessments in a manner that accomplishes the agency goal to perform a comprehensive assessment at each plant within the 4-year cycle.
