Salmonella In the Mix Brings Recall of Dietary Supplements

Galactooligosaccharides (GOS) is a “highly pure food grade powder derived from milk lactose” with uses including being an ingredient in dietary supplements for kids.

Since as early as May 10, 2012,  Westchester, IL-based Corn Products International Inc. has recalled the GOS manufactured in South Korea and sold  in 44.1 lb. plastic bags for food use only in the U.S.

Corn Products issued the recall in early May because almost 20 tons of GOS may be contaminated with Salmonella.  The ingredient was distributed to eight states and Canada, Czech Republic, New Zealand and the United Kingdom.

Corn Products initiated the recall by telephone, calling customers between May 10 and 16, and it was included in the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA”) June 26 Enforcement Report.

Corn Products gave its customers the lot numbers and product codes more than two months ago.

But only now has Sedona Labs recalls “certain lots” of its our iFlora® Kids Multi-Probiotic® and iFlora™ 4-Kids Powder distributed between 3/16/2011 and 5/3/2012 over concern for possible Salmonella contamination from the GOA ingredient.

Sedona Labs is unit of Nutri-Health Supplements, which in turn is owned by Atrium Innovations Inc., which makes supplements in eight manufacturing plants.

The UPC codes on the recalled products begin with four different numbers.  They are: 1074711, 1479611, 1640811, and 1734411.  All end with: 6 48575 01013 2.

Sedona’s recall was voluntary.  The company did not say why it took two months after it was notified about the Salmonella problem before it took action to notify its customers.

It did say  “customers possessing these products should immediately discontinue their use. To date, no illnesses have been reported in connection with the iFlora® Kids Multi-Probiotic® or iFlora™ 4-Kids Powder.

Sedona Labs says iFlora® Kids Multi-Probiotic® are sold throughout the US to health food stores and Internet retailers.  iFlora™ 4-Kids Powder has been sold via health care professionals.

Any consumers who wish to return iFlora® Kids Multi-Probiotic® or iFlora™ 4-Kids Powder may return the product to the place of purchase for a full refund.

Questions may be directed to the company at 1-888-816-8804, Monday-Friday between the hours of 7:00 AM and 3:00 PM PST.
