Food poisoning is bad when it causes vomiting so severe that it strains an oblique muscle.

The Colorado Rockies say that is why 28-year old Josh Outman has been placed on the 15-day disabled list (DL), meaning he will not join the team until at least mid-April.

Earlier the Rockies said the left-handed relief pitcher was suffering from food poisoning.  The club did not say what type of food poisoning, but were hopeful the young pitcher would be in the bull pen when the Rockies open their season Friday in Houston against the Astros.

That all changed when they learned Outman’s vomiting strained his right oblique muscle, not an injury a left-handed pitcher can take lightly. He was placed on the 15-day DL retroactive to March 30.

Outman has “a terrible case of food poisoning,” according to the Denver Post.

Outman came to the Rockies from Oakland earlier this year in a trade for outfielder Seth Smith. The left hander from Central Missouri State started out with Philadelphia.

Outman has pitched 52 innings during his brief major league career. He has 3 wins and 2 losses.
