Canada Issues Warnings Over Allergies

Dual warnings were issued to Canadians on April 1 about products that could cause trouble for people who have allergies to milk, and wheat and gluten.

The first warning from the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) and Garlic King was for people with allergies to milk.

Consumers with milk allergies were advised against consuming Garlic King brand Flavour Intensifier because it contains milk that is not declared on the label.

The affected product, Garlic King brand Flavour Intensifier is sold in 227 g, 454 g and 681 g packages with no UPC. All “Made Fresh on” dates up to and including 3-30-10 (March 30, 2010) are affected by this alert.

This product has been distributed in Ontario.

There have been no reported illnesses associated with the consumption of this product.

Consumption of this product may cause a serious or life-threatening reaction in persons with allergies to milk.

The manufacturer, Garlic King, Elora, ON is voluntarily recalling the affected product from the marketplace. The CFIA is monitoring the effectiveness of the recall.

CFIA and Hempola Inc. issued the second warning for people with allergies to wheat and gluten.  Anyone with a wheat and gluten allergy is advised not to consume Hempola brand Gluten Free Hempseed Flour.

The affected product may contain wheat gluten that is not declared on the label.

All lot codes of the Hempola brand Gluten Free Hempseed Flour, sold in 454 g packages bearing UPC 6 23188 78923 1 are affected by this alert. This product has been distributed in Ontario.

There has been one reported allergic reaction associated with the consumption of this product.

Consumption of this product may cause a serious or life-threatening reaction in persons with allergies to wheat.

The manufacturer, Hempola Inc., Barrie, ON is voluntarily recalling the affected product from the marketplace. The CFIA is monitoring the effectiveness of the recall.
